Production Rouen Ducklings: Classic Looks, Practical Performance
Production Rouen ducklings offer the iconic mallard-patterned plumage of the classic Rouen duck in a more practical, faster-maturing package optimized for small farm and homestead production. If you want a beautiful, calm, dual-purpose duck that looks like a wild mallard but produces like a farm duck, Production Rouens are your breed. The fun thing about production Rouens is that they come in all the colors – blue, silver, chocolate, Dusky, and Wild-Mallard color.
Production Rouen vs Standard Rouen — What’s the Difference?
These are not the Standard Rouen ducks,w hich are a large, heavy exhibition breed developed to the APA standard with a low, boat-shaped body and slow growth rate. These are Production Rouens, and they are very productive! They are selected for practical farm performance — faster maturity, better egg production, and a more upright carriage — while retaining the classic green-headed drake and mallard-patterned hen coloring that makes Rouens one of the most recognizable and beautiful duck breeds in the world. Production Rouens are not APA showable but are significantly more productive for homestead purposes than their exhibition counterparts. They are great foragers and like to raise their own babies.
Why Choose Production Rouen Ducklings
Production Rouens are calm, hardy, and well suited to Midwest backyard and small farm conditions. Hens are reliable layers producing 140 to 180 eggs annually in addition to their meat value. Drakes dress out at a generous table weight making them one of the better dual purpose options for homesteaders who want both eggs and meat from a single flock. Their calm temperament makes them easy to handle, good with children, and compatible with mixed species backyard flocks. The classic mallard coloration provides natural camouflage that reduces predator pressure compared to white breeds.
Production Rouen Ducklings and the USA Duck Team Network
Urban Wildfinds Farm produces Production Rouen ducklings as part of our commitment to offering homesteaders a full range of heritage breed options beyond our nationally ranked Cayuga program. While our Cayuga genetics represent our flagship show and specialty meat program, Production Rouens fill the practical backyard flock niche for homesteaders who prioritize classic looks and reliable dual purpose performance over exhibition potential.
