American Rabbit
Intro:
The American Rabbit is one of only a handful of rabbit breeds developed entirely in the United States, recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association and listed as a heritage breed by The Livestock Conservancy. Americans come in two recognized colors — blue and white — with a distinctive arched body type called a “mandolin” shape that sets them apart from other breeds. They were once the most popular rabbit in America for both meat and fur production, and are now considered a rare breed worth preserving.
Our Program:
USA Duck Team runs a pedigreed American Rabbit breeding program at our Kansas City, KS headquarters above our Cayuga duck flock. Our does include blues and whites with two blacks, and we maintain five bucks for genetic diversity. Our line is ranked 19th nationally in American Rabbit Breeder’s club Sweepstakes. We breed to American Rabbit Breeders Association standards and show at local and regional shows. Our does: Donna, Nancy, Tinkerbell, Snowy, Raven, and Blue Girl anchor our breeding program.
Why American Rabbits:
American Rabbits are a genuinely productive heritage meat breed — larger than most pet breeds, calm temperament, good maternal behavior, and efficient feed conversion. Rabbit meat is leaner than chicken, higher in protein, and can be substituted in almost any chicken recipe. During both World Wars the US government promoted backyard rabbit production as a critical home food security strategy — that logic is just as valid today for homesteaders wanting a sustainable small-space meat animal. A doe can produce multiple litters per year making rabbits one of the most efficient meat animals per square foot of any livestock.
Availability:
American Rabbit breeding trios (one buck, two does) and individual animals are available periodically through our Kansas City, KS headquarters. Priority goes to breeders interested in showing and preserving the breed. All sales are local pickup only. Contact us through our contact page to inquire about current availability. We do not ship live animals.

Rabbit meat from our program is available locally for pickup. See our cookbook page for recipe ideas including Braised Rabbit in Cream of Mushroom Sauce, Bourbon Street Rabbit, and Rabbit Cacciatore — all developed by our network’s recipe expert Jennifer Reynolds of Anatisovo Farm in Springfield, MO.
